I believe that the pleasure aim is more prevalent because it is expressed more often than community service. Although it may seem selfish, I think a lot of people would rather have pleasure than to give back to their community. Pleasure can be obtained any many different ways. I feel as though most songs are pleasurable whether it be physically or emotionally. “Invented Sex” is a song that focuses on the sexual side of pleasure whereas “The Closer I Get to You” expresses the love two people share for each other. From completing this assignment I realized that a lot of the music and artist that I listen to have made songs based on pleasure. So it was less difficult to find songs for the pleasure aim than the community service aim. I felt as though the community service aim was a little more challenging to complete. But while doing so I realized that a there are quite a few different artist that do create songs to inspire people to more involved and make better attempts to give back to our community. Songs like “Man in the Mirror” or “Lean on Me” really encourage people to better themselves in order to better the world. I think that the Hindu understanding of these four aims differs from that in American pop music because the overall goal of Hindu is to reach liberation or Moksha. In music, while it may speak on pleasure or community service it is made for just that reason. In the understanding of Hindu one must obtain, or is in fact created with, the four aims in life.

I like that you pointed out American artists' songs about bettering themselves in order to better the world. I think this is how a lot of American's view themselves and the world they live in. But it still seems selfish of us to see the world that way. Even when people try to help others, most of the time they have their own interest in mind.
ReplyDeletei agree that the community service songs were more about people bettering themselves thus bettering the world. I found a lot of these artists were giving advice to their listeners. Essentially, the artists were doing community service by helping others but the songs didn't inspire their listeners to help others. It's kind of sad really.
